April 2, 2024 Harvests To Begin Week of May 6th or 13th (weather depending) by Farmer Derek
The Hoop House, where plants harden off after the warm comfort of the Greenhouse and before they're exposed to the rigors of outside life.
The 2024 growing season is well underway. A lot of stop-and-go due to abundant rainfall (record breaking 8 inches in March in fact) but a just-long-enough dry period in the middle of the month to mostly stay on schedule with field preparations. One thing I've come to expect each season is something new weather related, and this year it happened to be our wettest March in 16 years (last year it was a very late hard frost in May). Even with extreme weather events scattered throughout the growing season, more appealing or tolerable weather always seems to arrive eventually, so now we just have to (try to) be patient.
Establishing evenly spaced rows and plants in the Hoop Tunnel using equipment from our transplanter machine.
We began seeding in the greenhouse the final week of February and will do so on a weekly basis into September. Early cool-weather loving crops like spinach, kale, radishes, turnips, arugula, bok choy, and lettuce mix were transplanted into four tunnels last week. Yesterday, amidst a light rain, the first batch of outdoor crops went in, including peas, chard, beets, cabbage, kohlrabi, cilantro, dill, as well as another round of choy, kale, arugula, and turnips. Next week we'll transplant head lettuce, romaine, escarole, radicchio, onions, scallions, fennel, as well as additional beets, kale, and other greens.
Farmers Gabby, Connor, and Alex (not pictured) transplant the first batch of crops under cover in the Hoop Tunnel.

A quiet heads up that the broccoli and cauliflower yield is most definitely low/abysmal this year. We'll point the finger at bug and disease and weed pressure, exceptionally wet weather at certain times, and the September heat wave. Can't win 'em all, apparently.
A reminder that there are 28 harvest weeks this year. The final week of pick up for Week A Half Shares is November 6th. For Week B Half, Medium, and Full Shares, the final week of pick up is November 13th.

All those crops we mentioned in the last newsletter that we had just seeded are now in the ground. We're now seeding and potting up summer staples: cherry and slicing tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, eggplant, tomatillos, watermelon, cucumbers, zucchini, basil, and okra.
The harvest season runs for 28 weeks this year and should commence the week of May 15th. Depending on the weather over the next few weeks and how the tunnel crops perform, there's a slight chance it could be a different week. We plan to announce in early May.
Staff will be available to help out and answer questions during the first couple weeks of pick up. We'll be present in the barn and in the pick up room.
The first couple of harvests should be: green garlic, lettuce mix, head lettuce, kale, bok choy, chard, radishes, turnips, herbs, and hopefully some of our trial spring crops of arugula and spinach.
Shares and pick up schedule: Full and Medium Shares pick up weekly; Half Shares every other week. Half Shares will be assigned Week A or B. Returning Half Shares will be assigned the same week as prior seasons.
Have u-pick harvest containers from last season? Bring them back to the farm to reuse.
Have your scissors ready! We're unable to supply scissors because they disappear at an incredible rate. You'll need some for cutting herbs and flowers.
Bags, bags, bags! Bring your own bags to collect your share. Feel free to donate plastic grocery bags. There's typically a stash underneath the pick up room tables.

So if you miss it this week, you'll receive it next go round.

After having not wanted to start for a couple of weeks, the truck decided to fire up for us when we needed it most, hauling thousands of pounds of winter squash and pumpkins to the barn last week. It's hard to grow enough cilantro to supply CSA demand. We highly recommend papalo as a cilantro replacement. It loves the heat of the summer and will provide a comparable flavor and aroma to cilantro in your salsa and whatever else you use cilantro for. We also recommend using it soon after harvest because the aroma seems to wane after cutting.
Harvest #17 (Week A) should include potatoes, edible pumpkins (or winter squash), tomatoes, lettuce, sweet peppers, onions, kale, swiss chard, arugula, (italian dandelion has been left for deer trap crop), eggplant, hot peppers, okra, shishito peppers, cured garlic, and herbs. Distributed weight of zucchini and cucumbers has fallen due to the impact of cucurbit downy and/or powdery mildew but should increase again soon once the 3rd planting gets going in earnest. Melon season is just beginning. Watermelon starts this week and will stick around for a while. Cantaloupe will also be harvested soon. Since it is just beginning there probably won't be enough watermelon for Medium Shares this week but we predict there will be enough next week (#12).
U-pick should include cherry/grape tomatoes, green/snap/string beans, tomatillos, flowers, and herbs.

April 1, 2021 Harvest Season to Begin Mid-May by Farmer Dana
Young seedlings soon to grace our tables!
Here's where we announce prior to each pick up week what the harvest will be. It's not always 100% accurate but we try our best to predict what will be harvested and distributed when you come to the farm to pick up your share.
Harvest season should begin either the week of May 17 or 24; it depends on the weather between now and then. We'll decide in early May.
The past few seasons the first couple of weeks of harvest looked something like this:
Harvest #1 (Week A) could include radishes, hakurei turnips, head lettuce, lettuce mix, green garlic (whole plant is edible at this stage!), bok choy, kale, swiss chard, escarole, endive, radicchio, dill, and cilantro. Some items may be a choice. U-pick should include a small handful of perennial herbs (catnip, oregano, lemon balm, bee balm, thyme, sage, mint, etc). Peas and strawberries tend to not be ready until the end of May or early June.

Late Fall Harvest #4 (Week B) should include cabbage, potatoes, kale, onions, lettuce mix, baby head lettuce, arugula, rosemary, beets, and rutabaga. We aren't 100% certain what the variety and quantity of specific greens will be until we begin harvesting midweek but each week the approximate total weight of fresh greens is 2.5 lbs for Full/Half shares and 1.75 lbs for Medium shares.

Late Fall Harvest #3 (Week A) should include cabbage, potatoes, kale, carrots, lettuce mix, baby head lettuce, baby chard, rosemary, and radishes (salad, purple daikon, watermelon). We aren't 100% certain what the variety and quantity of specific greens will be until we begin harvesting midweek but each week the total weight of fresh greens is 2.5 lbs for Full/Half shares and 1.88 lbs for Medium shares.
Pat harvests one-cut lettuce mix in the hoop house. One-cut lettuces are grown like regular lettuce heads but don't head-up; instead they form a whirl of baby leaves originating from one point. A cut with a knife turns the 'head' into a pile of baby lettuce leaves. Sowing, growing, and harvesting is easier than traditional lettuce mix.
Late Fall Harvest #2 (Week B) should include cabbage, potatoes, kale, carrots, lettuce mix, mild mustard greens mix, arugula, rosemary, and radishes (salad, purple daikon, watermelon).

September 20, 2020 Attributes of Autumn by Farmer Derek
Field 7 fall crops looking stellar! Almost perfect late summer weather (and perhaps some good management, maintenance, and soil health) has delivered what will hopefully be bountiful fall shares.
Harvest #19 (Week A) should include napa/chinese cabbage, lettuce, kale, arugula, garlic, leeks/onions, beets, kohlrabi, tomatoes, eggplant, sweet peppers, okra, hot peppers, Italian dandelion, Swiss chard, hakurei turnips, and salad radishes. Some items will be a choice. U-pick should include flowers and herbs. Due to the cold and time of the year the summer staples that have been hanging around will wind down but we don't know how much the weight will drop until we harvest.

Harvest #17 (Week A) should include leeks, onions, garlic, sweet peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, kale, arugula, lettuce, potatoes, basil, rosemary, okra, hot peppers, shishito peppers, green tomatoes, and italian dandelion. Some items will be a choice and may not be available during all pick up times (total weight/items will stay the same). U-pick is winding down but should include flowers and herbs. Edamame, tomatoes, husk cherries, and tomatillos may be open for 'gleaning' which basically means they're at the end of production, there's not enough quality fruit for everyone, the good ones are hard to find, take what you can get, etc. Consult the u-pick board for up-to-date information.

March 23, 2020 Auspiciously Planning for Harvests in May by Farmer Dana
Thinning beets inside the comfort of home whilst the children build forts and, in general, destroy the house.
CSA pick ups normally begin in mid-May. This year it should be either the week of May 11th or the 18th, depending primarily on weather conditions before then. We're staying abreast of the current situation off the farm. We're fortunately deemed an "essential business" so can remain open. Prior to the start of pick ups we'll research how other farms and markets are dealing with distribution and may adjust our pick up if necessary (hopefully minimally if at all). More information on this will come in the future but rest assured you can feel safe, secure, healthy, and happy here. That said, registration rates are on par with last year and the current situation is probably going to drive more folks to source food locally, especially directly from a farm. We have a finite membership goal and try not to go past it, so please consider signing up soon. To join, follow this link.
A fuzzy chick is another sure sign of spring, also evoking a fuzzy warm feeling.
We're excited about some changes to the crop plan that we expect will enhance shares over the course of the season. As mentioned, we planted peas two weeks earlier than normal and inside a tunnel which should result in an early abundant crop of sweet snap peas. Maybe less exciting but just as nutritious, we're experimenting with transplanting hakurei turnips and salad radishes instead of direct seeding them. Our aim is to have earlier and better quality roots in the spring. We've also expanded the number of spring broccoli and broccolini plants after a small trial run last spring. We're also excited about two new chicories, Bel Fiore radicchio and Benefine endive. They're much less bitter than other chicories and are perfect in a salad. We've stumbled upon watermelon and cantaloupe varieties that performed well last year and tasted great. More sweet peppers and cherry tomatoes are planned. New varieties of celosia, rudbeckia, and zinnia will add additional beauty to the u-pick flower patch. Into the u-pick herb garden will go more rosemary, parsley, dill, and cilantro than last year. After losing some of our currenty raspberry patch (Nova) to continuous soil moisture during 2018 we've decided to plant 500 more plants in a better location (Encore). Our other patch may rebound now that we installed a waterway directly above the area of the field but it never hurts to have more raspberries. Late-summer bearing raspberries (Caroline) put in two years ago should begin yielding this year.
What we assume is a garter snake is perhaps smelling us with its tongue.
In closing we want you to know that we very much care about the health and well-being of our farm and CSA community. If there's anything additional we could provide to you and your family please let us know. Feel free to come to the farm to unwind, disconnect, and walk the woods and fields.
Late Fall Harvest #8 (Week B) should include cabbage, napa cabbage, rutabaga, purple daikon radishes, potatoes, spinach, lettuce mix, garlic, carrots, beets, and watermelon radishes. Some items will be a choice.

Kimchi creation. Simply chop veggies, add salt water brine. Allow omnipresent lactobacillus bacteria to do their fermentation thing for a week or more. Enjoy the flavors and health benefits.
Late Fall Harvest #3 (Week A) should include cabbage, napa cabbage, radicchio, potatoes, kale, garlic, onions, carrots, arugula, lettuce mix, greens mix, beets, celeriac, hakurei turnips, purple daikons, watermelon radishes, and hopefully rosemary. Some items will be a choice.
Uncovering the Hoop Tunnel after last weekend's cold plunge. Uncovered for a few days, it was then recovered last Tuesday in anticipation of the serious mid-week drop in temperatures. Proper airflow is required to keep plant disease at bay. We also don't want the plants too warm or they may not adjust to the cold as well.
Late Fall Harvest #2 (Week B) should include Napa cabbage, green cabbage, radicchio, potatoes, garlic, onions, carrots, kale, arugula, lettuce mix, beets, purple daikon, celeriac, kohlrabi, and hakurei turnips. Some items will be a choice.
November 11, 2019 Commence the Late Fall! by Farmer Dana
There's some beautiful big tender arugula coming out of the Hoop House this week! Here we're removing the inner cover from the low hoops during this brief warm up. This cover goes on crops when temperature lows are forecast below 25 degrees. Outside it dropped to 19 Saturday morning. Inside it stayed above freezing.
Late Fall Harvest #1 (Week A) should include potatoes, garlic, onions, carrots, kale, arugula, radicchio, cabbage, napa/chinese cabbage, rosemary, and some roots like hakurei turnips, kohlrabi, celeriac, radishes, and beets. Herbs will be available for u-pick.
Farm crew members Craig, Haley, Jacob harvesting parsley last week amidst a fairly intense unintentional chickweed cover crop. Lettuce mix and two radicchio varieties stand out.
Harvest #26 (Week B) should include sweet potatoes, garlic, onions, bok choy, head lettuce, lettuce mix, arugula, endive, radicchio, cabbage (napa/green/red), carrots, hakurei turnips, celeriac, kohlrabi, kale, and collards. Some items will be a choice. Due to frosty low early morning temperatures there's a good chance the greens available in the pick up room will vary slightly but overall there will be a good supply of salad and cooking greens for sure.
It's been a good fall season for an abundance of greens.
Harvest #24 (Week B) should/could include sweet potatoes, cabbage (green/savoy/napa), head lettuce, garlic, onions, bok choy, lettuce mix, arugula, endive, fennel, cauliflower, hakurei turnips, celeriac, collards, escarole, kohlrabi, radicchio, and green tomatoes. U-pick should include herbs.
October 13, 2019 Introducing a Sweet New Few by Farmer Dana
Harvest #23 (Week A) should include sweet potatoes, cauliflower, hakurei turnips, bok choy, greens mix, endive, lettuce mix, garlic, onions, head lettuce, collards, cabbage (savoy, Napa), green peppers, green tomatoes (some have turned red already), hot peppers, beets, and fennel. We're taking a small break from kale, chard, and arugula while bok choy is looking stellar. U-pick will include herbs.
We're doing our best to keep up with the plethora of mature crops that are now available, including head lettuce and infinite lettuce mix. Plentiful sunshine and heat hastened many crops earlier maturity.
Harvest #22 (Week B) should include broccoli early in the week/cauliflower later in the week and beyond, potatoes, cabbage (Napa, savoy), kale, chard, onions, leeks, head lettuce, lettuce mix, arugula, endive, green peppers, green tomatoes, beets, and garlic. U-pick should include herbs from the herb garden.
Too much to do and not enough time today for a harvest picture; a photo of plentiful leeks will hopefully suffice. Sometimes we hear from members who don't know what to do with leeks, but we recommend using them as you would any other allium (onion, scallion) if you're having difficulty.
Harvest #20 (Week B) should include broccoli, garlic, onions, leeks, lettuce, savoy cabbage, potatoes, kale, Swiss chard, arugula, endive, sweet peppers, hot peppers, cilantro, dill, and tomatoes. U-pick should include herbs (parsley, rosemary, sage, thyme, oregano, papalo, mint, tarragon, lemon grass, etc.).
Harvest #19 (Week A) should include winter squash, potatoes, garlic, onions, leeks, kale, Italian dandelion, endive, arugula, cilantro, dill, tomatoes, sweet peppers, okra, hot peppers, Swiss chard, lettuce, and green tomatoes. U-pick should include herb garden herbs.

Harvest #18 (Week B) should include butter squash, potatoes, leeks, onions, garlic, kale, chard, endive, lettuce, sweet peppers, eggplant, hot peppers, okra, tomatoes, cilantro, and dill. U-Pick should include herbs from the herb garden. Field U-Pick has concluded for the season. Now we'll prepare those areas for cover crops and get ready for the installation of additional waterways for flash flood water management.
Harvest #17 (Week A) should include potatoes, winter squash, onions, leeks, garlic, scallions, kale, lettuce, tomatoes, hot peppers, okra, Swiss chard, endive, eggplant, rosemary, cilantro, dill, and parsley. U-pick should include snap beans, edamame, green/less-ripe tomatoes (cherry, plum, grape), tomatillos, flowers, and herbs. U-pick crops are quickly winding down; this may be the final week for many of them. Very soon we need to prepare the field for waterway excavation to solve the flash flood problem out there. Also, we're planning to take a brief intermission from sweet pepper harvesting to let them bulk up and ripen.
Harvest #16 (Week B) should include winter squash, potatoes, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, scallions, garlic, sweet peppers, hot peppers, okra, eggplant, Italian dandelion, Swiss chard, kale, and rosemary. U-pick should include edamame, snap beans, tomatoes (cherry, plum, grape), flowers, and herbs.
Another pleasing image of winter squash curing in the greenhouse. Hoping for better curing and storage success this season.

U-pick will probably only include herbs this week as we wait on raspberries and beans to ripen and mature.
A pick up room board note: When we write, for example, "1 lb total combined weight from:" we mean you may take up to 1 pound total from the listed options which could be 1 lb of a single listed item or any combination of the listed items totaling 1 pound.
A pea note: The snow and snap pea crops suffered this year. It was the worst production in our 11-year tenure for sure. We are certain it was due to the early onset of pea root rot which is caused by organisms in the soil or potting mix or even compost (Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, or Aphanomyces). Normally a simple crop rotation plan ensures crop success. Last year at this time each member was receiving 2 quarts of peas. Please accept our apologies for this disappointment. We'll plan for a better yield next year.
Harvest #5 (Week A) should include garlic scapes, yellow and green zucchini, romaine lettuce, head lettuce, kale, chard, endive, Italian dandelion, parsley, dill, cilantro, hakurei turnips, kohlrabi, beets, and strawberries. U-pick should include strawberries, snap peas, and herbs.

Late Fall harvest #4 (Week B) should include sweet potatoes, rutabaga, daikons, carrots, beets, mini cabbage, napa/chinese cabbage, potatoes, garlic, spinach, lettuce mix, arugula, and greens mix. Some items will be a choice.
Harvested from our cover crop patches, these daikons are also called 'tillage radishes' due to their ability to break up hardpan and loosen soil with their large taproot. A very easy way to incorporate these into your meals is to simply grate them into whatever dish your making. That way they cook quickly and blend in and you only need to add what you think is appropriate since they keep well. Exterior evidence of insect interaction can be safely ignored.
Late Fall CSA harvest #3 (Week A) should include sweet potatoes, rutabaga, daikon radishes, carrots, beets, potatoes, mini cabbage, napa/chinese cabbage, spinach, garlic, and greens mix. Some items will be a choice.

*<>*We're doing our best to ensure a steady flow of produce from the fields to the pick up room. Suffice it to say it has been a very challenging growing season, mostly due to excessive rain (probably will end up being our wettest season in 10 years). Up until now we've felt fairly pleased with the overall yield and harvest of most of the crops considering the adverse weather but right now we are noticing slow and stunted growth of some of our early fall staples that typically begin yielding extremely well by now such as savoy cabbage, broccoli, kale, chard, spinach, arugula, and greens mix. There has been an obvious slow down in growth the past few weeks due to an absent sun and too much moisture. We hope from your perspective that the pick up room produce has been satisfactory and that you understand the connection between weather and farming. We do apologize for this inconvenience and will think critically for ways to avoid this problem in the future.*<>*

Checking on the greens underneath two layers of interior row cover in the high tunnel. Amazingly, as of Sunday afternoon, much of them look like they should be harvestable this week and beyond. The taste is also truly incredible thanks to the cold; I'm pretty sure that was the sweetest kale I've ever eaten.

Quick note on the raspberries: They're less plentiful this year so we're unable to give everyone a 1/2-pint like we did last season. We just transplanted another 500 plants to increase quantities for next season (current patch was started with only 250 plants). Later this season we'll hopefully be able to enjoy an ample amount of blackberries. We promise to eventually perfect organic bramble berry production! Thank you for understanding.

On the left, fresh oregano and on the right dried oregano that is just about ready for the jar.
May 21, 2017 Welcoming Radishes and First of Strawberries By Derek McGeehan
Strawberries have begun ripening thanks to last week's mini heat wave. With the cooler and wetter weather they'll ripen less quickly, which normally means the season lasts longer. Right now there's only enough for us to pick for you; eventually they'll be opened up for u-pick. Gabe and Abigail sit on an attractive dry-stack stone miniwall made by assistant farmer Pat.
Harvest #2 (Week B) should include radishes, strawberries, kale, chard, arugula, bok choy, broccoli raab, mizuna, spinach, lettuce, green garlic, and perennial herbs. Some items may be a choice. U-pick should include perennial herbs.
Roots and greens of radishes are edible raw or cooked. To subdue the radish spiciness try cutting the root in half and pan frying for a few minutes in fat/oil and salt. Greens can be eaten is salads, smoothies, or cooked any which way.
May 14, 2017 Harvest Season Commences! By Derek McGeehan
sea of greens
Harvest #1 (Week A) should include kale, spinach, chard, bok choy, arugula, mizuna, broccoli raab, green garlic, oregano, mint, and winter savory. Some items will be a choice.
What is green garlic? Good question! It is the young/immature garlic plant, edible in its entirety. Simply use like a leek or a scallion.
Most of the greens this week can be used interchangeably in a salad, stir fried, sautéed, smoothied, or gently cooked on the stove top.
There may not be any u-pick this week as we attempt to round out the portion of the share that we harvest with herbs from the perennial herb garden. With the expected heat wave this week, crops should grow by leaps and bounds and u-pick should begin shortly. Strawberries, peas, and herbs picked by you aren't far away! Thank you for understanding.
Farm dog Borcie strikes a pose between beds of spinach and chard. Miracles of row cover plus an extra fertile previously fallowed field allowed these crops to grow fast and furiously.

A simple way to incorporate your miscellaneous roots or cabbage into any meal is to grate them. This was a splendid epiphany recently because it is so easy, improves a dish, incorporates seasonal produce, and adds quality nutrition. We highly recommend you try it, especially if you're having difficulty using some of the less-familiar roots.

Lows on Wednesday and Saturday mornings bottomed out at 29-30 degrees; when they drop farther into the 20s is when we need to begin covering some crops with floating row cover, or accept damage.
